In her interview with the magazine
« Poles », Henriette Rasmussen, a political figure in
Greenland stated :
« In the past, the Inuits knew how to
interpret every meteorological change, which allowed them to
foresee the weather for the coming days. Nowadays, the
weather changes more quickly. The winds are very strong and
the ocean currents change too: the icebergs follow unusual
routes. Recently, a fisherman told me that the temperature
of the sea had risen in certain places, sometimes by several
degrees. The change is obvious. It’s a real cause for
concern, as our culture has been closely linked to nature
for hundreds of years. When you build a kayak, you adapt it
to your body; in this way you become part of the craft,
which itself is part of the ocean. The Inuits are an
integral part of the ecosystem. What will happen to us if
the ice disappears? »
“I am convinced that we will find a way
out, as we have a great capacity for adapting, but the
situation is alarming.”
